A relaxing day by the seashore is what's on offer at Absecon Lighthouse. The historic landmark is the third tallest lighthouse in the U.S., with 228 steps leading up to spectacular views of Atlantic City and its distinctive boardwalk. Lit for the first time in 1857, the kerosene flame at Absecon was visible up to 19.5 nautical miles away, thanks to Fresnel lenses custom-made in Paris.
The lighthouse was restored in 1998, and its caretakers now host fashion shows, golf tournaments, murder mystery evenings, and seasonal theme events to benefit the upkeep of the building. Themed events include "Be A Pirate Day" which features a buccaneer show and pirate-related activities; Victorian tea parties, and Victorian inspired winter holiday festivities. Aside from the views and family-friendly events, Absecon displays exhibits that include photos from the 1800s, tide information, and restoration photos.
Absecon, a great family day-trip destination, even welcomes dogs (on a leash) to come enjoy the seaside. The murder mystery and romantic dinner evenings (try the Valentine's Day dessert & climb) that are hosted year-round make this an appealing destination for couples, too. Check the lighthouse website for event dates and information before visiting.
