Come face to face with elusive jellyfish, moray eels, and a variety of exotic, brightly colored fish from around the world at the three-story Atlantic City Aquarium. Located at the Historic Gardner's Basin, this aquatic wonderland presents visitors with close-up looks at some of the most intriguing creatures of the ocean. Part of the Atlantic City Historic Waterfront Foundation, formed in 1976, the Atlantic City Aquarium is dedicated to preserving wildlife and teaching children to appreciate the natural wonders of the sea.
This combination aquarium and marine science education center features 11 tanks that display more than 100 different kinds of fish. Watch and interact with a professional diver as she plunges into the 25,000-gallon "Fish of the Mid-Atlantic Tank", swims with nurse sharks, and feeds cownose rays at the "Dive and Dine" show. Or experience some hands-on thrills yourself at the Shark and Ray Touch Tank, which allows brave guests to brush their hands along the smooth skin of mysterious creatures such as white spotted bamboo sharks and spotted stingrays. Perhaps no exhibit better illustrates the charm and wonder of marine life than the 1,000-gallon Live Coral tank. This enchanting display of color showcases a variety of coral native to the Caribbean and Indo-Pacific. The third-floor observatory offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean meeting the bay, a not-so-subtle reminder of the vastness of the aquatic world. Self-guided tours are always an option, with electronic information available for every exhibit.
In addition to the oceanic wonders at the Atlantic City Aquarium, the Historic Gardner's Basin offers a refreshing change from the more populated areas of the city. Located on New Hampshire Avenue along the majestic bays of the Atlantic Ocean, this delightful area across from the coast guard station features charming antique stores, two waterfront restaurants, and a variety of boat excursions. For anyone looking for a relaxing retreat from the lively Boardwalk scene, the Atlantic City Aquarium and the Historic Gardner's Basin prove a worthwhile destination to experience all the magic the ocean has to offer.
