Ask anyone in South Jersey what a most cherished childhood memory is and a likely response will include visions of Storybook Land. For the past 55 years, local kids have been peering through splintering wooden window frames into mini houses where porridge bowls were infiltrated by the Three Bears, gaping in naïve awe at the towering shoe where the Little Old Woman raised her many children, chugging along the tracks in shiny red railroad cars, and gripping Dumbo's ears 'til their little knuckles turn white in the Jumping Jumbos ride.
All of the classic, favorite nursery rhymes and tales are illustrated three-dimensionally in this imagination-inspiring amusement park. Toddlers are dwarfed by a massive Mother Goose, complete with staff and bonnet, who gazes down endearingly at visitors. The price of admission allows kids to pass through the faux castle walls and gate at the entrance, heavily guarded by colossal toy soldiers, and grants unlimited access to games and rides. While older kids and adolescents may find this humble park to be "outdated," parents, grandparents, and younger children alike will certainly appreciate the timelessness that is Storybook Land.
Located on the Black Horse Pike (Route 40/322) in Egg Harbor Township about ten miles from Atlantic City, Storybook Land is a short drive from the Jersey Shore (on *the left* if you're heading west). And while you're taking a break from the beach, if you continue to drive west on "the Pike" (as Jersey folk commonly refer to this stretch of alternative highway), you'll come across an old-fashioned Stewart's Root Beer stand with car-hop service and refreshing ice cream floats.
But if you're hungry while still at Storybook Land, The Gingerbread House Snack Bar and the Caboose Café offer a select variety of basic snacks and beverages to suit the taste buds of backseat riders and kids' menu aficionados -- including chicken nuggets, grilled cheese, and popcorn. Special festivities take place at Storybook Land during the Halloween and Christmas seasons, and souvenirs (including gigantic, novelty sized pencils!) are available at the Castle20Gift Shop.
