Designated as a National Historic Landmark by the Department of the Interior, the Mount Auburn Cemetery of Cambridge Massachusetts is recognized as one of the United States most noteworthy landscapes. Its horticultural journey began in 1831 when the location was founded as "America's first garden cemetery."

Affectionately referred to as "Sweet Auburn" by locals, the charm and beauty of this sanctuary is unparalleled. When visitors stroll through this sun dappled landscape, they are greeted by a strategically cultivated abundance of flora and vegetation. Plant life ranges from graves festooned with poppy flowers, the familiar symbol of blissful slumber, to towering birches, sycamores, and oaks. In addition to the natural flourishes, there is a great deal of ornamental plantings, monuments, fences, fountains, chapels, and poetic dedications for visitors to peruse. Unlike traditional cemeteries, this is not simply a place to honor the deceased, but a beautifully intoxicating oasis.

Different areas, each meticulously maintained, harbor a diverse variety of styles from Victorian era plantings, natural woodlands and expansive vistas, to small enclosures. Over 5,000 trees pepper the scene and roving visitors are often beguiled to relax beneath their soothing branches to melt into a naturalistic revere.

Guests may take a guided tour of the park or choose to meander through the peaceful splendor on their own, or enjoy one of the many public educational and interpretive programs offered on the Cemetery's horticulture. Situated in the heart of Cambridge off the Harvard Square redline stop, it is prized as one of Boston's historical gems; certainly worth an afternoon's venture, weather permitting.
