If visiting an art museum is hovering low on your list of things to do while on Cape Cod, you may want to reconsider. The artwork on exhibition at Cape Cod Museum of Art (CCMA) could be a part of any renowned art collection worldwide. And it often is.

Thousands of artists have flocked to the striking light and natural beauty of Cape Cod since the early 19th century, and it is the mission of the CCMA to collect and exhibit their paintings, photographs, and sculptures in its seven climate-controlled galleries. Formerly known as a fine arts museum, the name was officially changed in 2004 to better represent the wide ranging media used by local artists. An offbeat upcoming exhibit highlights an installation piece where ping-pong balls inked with drawings move along a conveyor belt, portraying what artist Barbara Cohen describes as, “a free-form drawing in motion”.

The reference library, with its diverse catalog of books, videos, and music; a theater screening films focusing on visual arts and artists; and an on-going lecture series, all make good on CCMA’s mission to foster cultural growth within the community.

In 2003, the Weny Education Center, a huge open studio space providing room for art classes and workshops, was built as an attachment to the museum.

If you have kids in tow, ArtQuest in the Galleries, a fun scavenger hunt inside the museum, uncovers details hidden in the exhibits for take home prizes.

Just a mile up 6A, The Marshside restaurant overlooks a beautiful marsh and harbor, and is popular for lunch and dinner. The Underground Bakery is around the corner from the CCMA and serves fresh baked pastries, breads, teas, and coffee in a snug subterranean café.
