Camping, when you think of it in utterly literal terms, seems like a fairly strange notion (“Let’s go and sleep on the ground in the woods tonight!”), but it continues to capture our imagination and we continue to go back again and again. With the serene landscape, the wildlife, the escape from everyday obligations and technology, and the s’mores, camping is one of America’s favorite pastimes. For those who spend time on Cape Cod, Nickerson State Park is one of the most popular places to go to get away. The woods of this state park have a quiet, classic beauty as sunlight drifts leisurely down through a canopy of green leaves and birdsong flutters about uninterrupted by the sounds of traffic and construction. Nickerson provides the perfect experience for those looking to bike, hike, or simply relax by the campfire with a good book: There are extensive hiking trails, an eight mile bike path that connects to the Cape Cod Rail Trail, and 400 campsites spread out over 1,900 acres. There are also RV hookups available, and if you’re just swinging by the area then Nickerson is one of the only places where you can make a reservation for just one night. Numerous kettle ponds left by glaciers tens of thousands of years ago are available for canoeing and swimming and are stocked year round with catch-and-release trout. Try out Flax Pond for some great swimming, boat rentals are available from Jack’s, and Higgins Pond is the best for fishing and birdwatching. There are also equestrian trails, but it’s BYOH.

Nickerson isn’t too far away from civilization thanks to well-kept bathrooms and showers, and the grocery store is a short drive if you’ve forgotten to pick up the hot dogs for dinner. There’s an amphitheater as well as seasonal interpretive and recreational activities, and if you seek the more traditional Cape Cod beach experience, Cape Cod Bay is within walking and biking distance. Nickerson is affordable, with campsites running about $15-$20 a night, but make sure to book far in advance because it is a popular vacation site, and reservations go quickly.
