When visiting Eastham, plan on stopping in at the Salt Pond Visitor’s Center, gateway to Cape Cod’s National Seashore, even if it’s just to pick up a trail map or the monthly calendar of events. Once inside, take a quick peek at the display boards where dates and times for ongoing guided walks, canoe trips, and lighthouse tours are posted.

Begin your day early and indulge yourself with a sunrise yoga class on the beach, led by a certified instructor, courtesy of the National Park Service. Or, spend the evening stargazing alongside the sea with a park ranger as you listen to folk stories around a crackling bonfire. Most events are free of charge but, because of limited space, advance registration is suggested.

And at some point, try to spend an hour or so in the facility itself. A small but truly fascinating museum takes you through the unique geological, historical, and cultural history of the Outer Cape with artifacts and models of native plants and animals. Learn how a salt marsh is considered the most productive place on earth, producing over 10 tons of organic material per acre each year. Amaze at a large collection of scrimshaw and see an incredibly detailed tribute to England’s Queen Victoria on the surface of sperm whale’s tooth.

The indoor theater screens several short films on a rotating basis throughout the day, offering an opportunity to brush up on local history before hitting the nearby beaches or heading off onto the many hiking trails which begin just outside the Center. On your way out, be sure to pick up a complimentary copy of Park News, the official newspaper of Cape Cod National Seashore, for tons of useful information certain to enhance your visit to this corner of planet earth.
