Surrounded by Eden Park and close to Mirror Lake, with a fabulous view of the Ohio River, Krohn Conservatory is home to 3,500 species of exotic plants from around the world. Visitors to this tropical green house can enjoy a variety of flora and fauna when exploring the permanent displays in the Desert Garden, Palm and Tropical houses. The conservatory is also home to Bonsai and Orchid exhibits and six floral shows.
The Palm House, one of several tropical houses, is a 45-foot high greenhouse with a variety of palm trees, rubber trees, and shrubby plants, and a 20-foot high waterfall with stream and small cave. If you didn't know you were in Cincinnati, you would think you had just stepped inside a small rain forest.
Every spring, butterflies from around the world are set loose in a special garden for the popular "Butterfly Show." In 2010 the show featured cultural artifacts and butterflies from Japan. The show is especially popular with children and photographers.
In addition to the permanent displays and the Butterfly Show, different programs and special exhibits and events are offered throughout the year. After closing time, it's not unusual to see the glimpse of a new bride, as the venue is a popular rental for weddings. In December, the "Holiday Floral Show" features a train display and live nativity scene.
Renowned for its history and architectural significance, the conservatory has been a landmark in Cincinnati for over 75 years. Scholars of architecture will note that the aluminum and glass structure was typical of the Art Deco design from the 1930s. The Conservatory continues to evolve and change with the Orchid House and Bonsai Display among the most recent additions.
