Consumption; Americans are exceptional at it. It keeps our economy moving. It creates jobs. Fantastically, higher amounts of consumption equate to a greater potential to consume in the future. The country's entrepreneurial spirit understands this corollary. Over the years, shopping has evolved from local, Main Street shops to massive, shopping spectacles. In the 1980s, indoor malls were the newest innovation that brought consumers and producers together. But even the mall's offerings were limited by space. With their wallets, U.S. citizens democratically demanded more opportunities to spend – and they got it with the inception of the Outlet Mall.
The Cincinnati Premium Outlets recently opened in Monroe, Ohio, directly off I-75 at exit 29. It is halfway between downtown Cincinnati and downtown Dayton, on one of the most crowded thoroughfares in the country. Rectangular in shape, six courtyards anchor the mall's interior – two in the middle and four on the corners. The largest stores are located at the intersection of these courts: Polo Ralph Lauren, Under Armour, The North Face, Hanesbrands, Banana Republic, Coach, Charlotte Russe, Gap, Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, Brooks Brothers, Columbia Sportswear, Adidas, Joe's Jeans, and Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th.
The four corner courtyards flow into narrow, covered shopping corridors, whereas the two middle courts are open, facing one another. In that space is a food court and information center. In the information center is an ATM, Ohio Lottery ticket booth, and a stroller rental station. Adjacent to the food court is an outdoor eating area where events are held. On Saturdays and holidays during the summer, live music is performed between noon and 3pm.
The Outlet's website is a great resource for discovering events and promotions. Occasionally the entire mall has a sale. For instance, Tuesdays are known as 50 Plus Shopper Perks day: every shopper 50 years or older gets 10% off any item with a valid photo ID. Also, individual stores have promotions; they change often, so make sure to check online to avoid missing a great deal.
As a part of the national chain of Premium Outlets run by Simon Property Group, location explains a lot about the underlying strategy of their malls. Most are located along highways between two major cities so they can draw visitors making day trips from their home, while also reeling in those on long distance trips. Additionally, because of this median position, exits are selected where space is not an issue. Similarly, parking is not a problem either. In fact, many visitors drive from one end of the mall to the other to save time and drop off purchases. However, walking between stores is easily possible if shoppers are willing to carry multiple bags on their arms – behavior greatly encouraged by the 100 stores at the Cincinnati Premium Outlets. So get out there, spend money, find great deals, and enjoy being an American consumer.
