In the Lincoln Heights district off Lamar Street just a few miles northeast of downtown LA lies the only remaining winery in the city of Los Angeles. Founded in 1917 by Italian Santo Cambianica, the winery was dedicated to Saint Anthony in hopes that it would bring him good fortune. Cambianica then passed on his beloved winery to his nephew, Stefan Riboli. The Italian translation of Saint Anthony, San Antonio, is still the name the winery goes by today, with the fourth generation of Riboli's family still at its head.
Over the years, the winery's former vineyards have all been sold to outside commercial interests, leaving the vineyard to draw most of its grapes from the 500-acre Riboli family farm in Monterey and another smaller vineyard in Napa Valley, in addition to contracts with other California growers. The winery produces several varieties of both red and white varietal, table, and dessert wines. Several of its award-winning bottles include the San Simeon Cabernet Sauvignon, San Antonio Marsala, Kinderwood Merlot, and the La Quinta Syrah Port.
The winery also operates a critically-acclaimed wine shop, restaurant, and several banquet halls. The nationally-known wine shop features one of the most complete selections of fine wine, champagnes, and spirits in the Los Angeles area. Named after and inspired by the Riboli family's matriarch, the winery's residential Maddalena Restaurant specializes in northern Italian simple but flavorful cooking, including fresh pastas, grilled entrees, fresh gourmet salads, and traditional desserts. The restaurant, with its festive atmosphere, also features private banquet rooms such as the Heritage Cellar, Our Vintage Room, Fermenting Room, and the Main Dining Room to add a touch of class to parties of virtually any size.
