So you've ridden to the top of the Sears Tower and endured the lines at the Empire State Building. But in LA, the U.S. Bank Tower is the landmark high-rise jutting out beyond the skyline. It looms over the city at about 1,018 feet, marking its territory as the tallest domestic skyscraper west of Chicago. Designed by Pei, Cobb Freed & Partners and completed in 1990, the structure represents 72 stories of prime real estate at the center of downtown Los Angeles.

A fixture dear to the hearts of many Angelenos, the tower shows some spirit of its own during significant holidays and sporting events, with a glass crown that radiates corresponding colored lights. Its glistening white granite walls house mostly commercial office space, though Unity, a large mural in the lobby, is also a noteworthy tenant. Created with mixed media by artists Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid, the work illustrates the diverse heritage of Los Angeles.

The U.S. Bank Tower is located across the street from the Los Angeles Central Library — it was formerly known as the Library Tower due to this proximity — and the charming Bunker Hill Steps hug the building as they ascend toward Hope Street. Since the tower is easily a drive-by attraction, keep an eye out for it while on your way to these or other LA monuments.
