Hidden behind the glass box structure at 2000 Avenue of the Stars is the first gallery in Los Angeles devoted solely to the photograph. At first glance, the low, horizontal façade of the Annenberg Space for Photography is reminiscent of early modern architectural gems like the Barcelona Pavilion. Inside its windowed exterior, austere walls breathe with over a thousand vivid images as captured by eminent and burgeoning photographers from around the globe.

A recent effort of the philanthropic Annenberg Foundation, the Space opened in March 2009 with a mission "to inform and inspire the public by connecting photographers, social consciousness, and the human experience through powerful imagery and stories." Contemporary subjects treated by the gallery have ranged from perspectives of Los Angeles to sports photography. In its first season, the Space also took over as host to Picture of the Year International, an emotive exploration of the social, political, and emotional landscape witnessed by the undaunted lens of photojournalists at home and abroad.

In conjunction with the display of conventional prints around the perimeter of the Space and high-definition images in the central digital gallery, an on-site reading room is tucked away in a back corner, allowing visitors to delve a little deeper. Weekly lectures and occasional workshops are also available to the public with prior registration.

After a few hours absorbed in the gallery's visual smorgasbord, the fresh air of its grassy courtyard invites a picnic, quiet reflection, or a moment of relaxation to let it all sink in.
