This Disney tribute to the Golden State distills much of what is great in California into a single 55-acre theme park. This magical festival of shows, parades, and attractions celebrating California's storied past and potential future, offers ways to experience everything from the Gold Rush to Hollywood's golden era, to the timeless allure of the beach.
California Adventure, which opened in 2001, is part of the Disneyland Resort, located just off I-5 in Anaheim, one hour south of downtown Los Angeles. This is the sister park to Disneyland and contains some fabulous attractions and rides with the same imaginative qualities, and more are in the works.
Its entrance is through a grand Golden Gate Bridge, and the park includes five main areas: Sunshine Plaza, Hollywood Pictures Backlot, The Golden State, A Bug's Land and Paradise Pier. Most of them are meant to resemble various aspects of California, its culture, landmarks, and history. Among the thrill rides is the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, a thrilling plummet in a haunted elevator of the Twilight Zone, and California Screamin', a roller coaster launched from the beach.
This park is a great destination and particularly so if you want to avoid the crowds of its older, more famous neighbor Disneyland.
