Most aquariums offer people a glimpse into a mystifying underwater world, but few allow visitors to partake in the research conducted by real-life marine explorers: the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium does just that. A research facility first and an aquarium second, the Cabrillo center focuses on Southern California marine life, exhibiting sea creatures in simulated natural habitats. The Exploration Center displays tools scientists use to explore the coastal park, and guests are even allowed to try out some of the gear. While in the Exploration Center, be sure to creep through the "crawl in" aquarium to get an immersive scuba-diving experience without ever getting in the water. Children love spying animals through high-grade telescopes, and the younger kids are entertained by marine-themed art projects. Check out the Aquaculture Kitchen, where food is grown to nourish the animals, and witness researchers at work in the Aquatic Nursery where you might get a chance to help hatch grunion eggs!

The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium has many educational programs for schools and individuals, strives to be one of the most eco-friendly research laboratories in the world, has a vast library on aquatic topics, and still offers all the "oohs" and "aahs" expected from aquariums—including a mesmerizing moon jelly tank and an outdoor tide pool touch tank.
