Ever felt like letting loose and serenading an unfamiliar audience? Leave Sing Star at home and head out to some of LA's live Karaoke bars, hidden mong the clubs and restaurants of the busy streets of Los Angeles. Karaoke originated in Japan over 20 years ago and was a channel for Japanese business men to relax with a beer and sing along to a favorite song. Since then, Karaoke has become a popular means of entertainment worldwide and has snuck its way into the American culture. Grab some friends and stop by these recommended Karaoke spots.

Gas Lite

This small friendly bar located off Wilshire Blvd is a great place for anyone to make a debut. This intimate setting has a large bar with relaxing dining and lounge seats surrounding the stage. The Gas Lite opens daily at 6am and has a blended crowd of college students, local celebrities and out-of-towners. Happy Hour is offered every night until 9pm with special "Bucket Beer" discounts. Elle Magazine has highlighted the Gas Lite as a "world famous" karaoke bar, so stop by and see what all the fuss is about.

Backstage Bar & Grill

Located across the streets from Sony Studios in Culver City, this bar inspires anyone to take on the mic. Backstage has been around for over 70 years and with its dim lighting, warm fire pit and friendly staff, this Karaoke spot welcomes even the timid. In addition to being LA's top- ranked karaoke bar, HD flat screens cover the walls, convenient for any sports fan. Everyone will benefit from its cheap drinks and fresh food; this is a great location for those on a budget. Backstage is open daily from 11am to 2am.

Orchid Karaoke Club

This upscale Karaoke club was voted one of Los Angeles' top three karaoke bars. With over 40 private rooms featuring the best sound and video equipment, along with a private "butler" button, this club is nothing but extraordinary. Different than normal bars, Orchid offers a variety of flavorful Hawaiian food such as pork pot roast and beef short ribs. The Orchid is known for its excellent service and full menu of wine, beer, liquors, appetizers, and dinner entrees that are delivered directly to your private rooms. Whether you have a small group or large party, the Orchid accommodates any crowd.

Smog Cutter

The classic, stereotypical Karaoke bar, this place is known to be loud and crowded. This family establishment is known for its intense, rowdy locals congregating around the pool table, bar, or juke box. Not your average dive bar, Smog Cutters is an eye-catching scene and not for the feeble party goers: once you step inside this bar's quarters, be ready to go all out. Weekends are packed and chances are slim you will get to sing your favorite song, so take the mic on a weeknight and sing your heart out.
