When the afternoon fog burns off in the charming community of Malibu, there is a clear view of the islands off the coast of California. Many of the local bars are exposed to the ocean with windows positioned against the sand's edge, creating a backdrop for a relaxing experience. These recommended bars are easily accessible from the Pacific Coast Highway that runs parallel to the ocean.

Coral Beach Cantina

Turn on some music, roll down the windows, and start your sightseeing journey at the Coral Beach Cantina. Stop by this rustic Mexican Cantina, meet some locals and sip on a "Malibu Margarita" or one its many variations. Complement your beverage with authentic nachos or traditional Ceviche at this quaint pit stop. Next, make your way down the winding highway to destination two, Zuma's Sunset Restaurant.

Zuma's Sunset Restaurant

This beachfront restaurant is located across from Zuma Beach. With limited parking (due to the daily migration of crowds of city dwellers to the beach), be prepared for a brisk walk. Enjoy a refreshing beer or glass of wine while observing the surfers, boogie boarders and other beach goers. Pick your dining area, either at the outdoor patio or modern, polished dining room. If you are in no rush, stick around for Happy Hour, Tuesday to Friday from 5pm to 7pm. When the busy crowd gets to be too much, pack up and continue north to Paradise Cove.

Paradise Cove Beach Café

Make your way down the narrow driveway until you reach this hidden paradise that has been a part of the Malibu community for over 100 years. Paradise Cove Beach Café has one of the largest local collections of historical photographs, an integral part of the restaurant's interior décor. Unwind with a "Marvelous Wine" or "Paradise Cocktail" at the outdoor beach patio, sink your feet into the warm sand, and watch the waves crash 100 yards ahead. Before leaving, venture out and take a stroll down the cliff-canopied beach. When you're ready to see what else Malibu has to offer, grab your keys from valet and travel over to Dukes barefoot bar.

Dukes

Located by Malibu Point, Dukes is named after Duke N Kahanamoku, the "father of international surfing". Celebrate the Aloha Spirit and watch the distant sailboats pass, or soak up the ocean's fragrant aroma at the outdoor bar. No matter what night you arrive, Dukes has a special every night of the week, including Mai Tai Madness, Fish Taco Night, and Hawaiian dancers on Friday.

Moonshadow's

Another great Malibu bar is the nautical-colored Moonshadow's Blue Lounge, only a short drive from Dukes. Let loose, indulge, and enjoy the California sunset from this outdoor lounge while listening to live music. Thursday through Sunday, from 8pm to close, local DJ Mike Cole will soothe your soul with his tranquil beats. At this upscale social setting, transition into night with a classy sparkling wine, Cabernet Sauvignon, or spice it up with some sake.
