  • The Shellback Tavern

  • Description: The Shellback Tavern came to life as The Knothole and then The Surf after World War II. Famous for their pizza and reasonably priced drinks, the location became an instant hit on the beach bar scene. The original owners were Don Hartsong and Ed Jamison. In 1973 local bartender Richard Swartz and his partner Jim Korshall purchased the bar and renamed it the Shellback Tavern. Jim sold his interest to former Hermosa councilman Jack Wood. Jack sold to local resident and patron Steve Petroff in 1976. Steve and Richard remained partners until May of 2000. Manhattan Beach native Bob Beverly took over ownership in 2000 and still owns the Shellback today.
