Napili Kai

Napili Kai

At number ten, the Napili Kai resort on Maui's northwest coast stands out for its ability to stand alone. The only resort on Honokeana Cove, Napili Kai offers a quiet and unobstructed Hawaiian vacation. Snorkel in the peaceful cove right outside your door, and whale watch here during peak season (November through April). A pristine white-sand beach lines the shore: the perfect place to relax with your spouse or family. At night, the crashing of ocean waves is the only sound you'll hear. While Napili Kai is not as upscale as some other island resorts, the serenity of Honokeana Cove more than makes up for it. Accommodation choices include hotel rooms, suites, or condos, so feel free to bring extended family and friends.

Kaanapali Alii

Kaanapali Alii

Kaanapali Alii, our number nine resort, is located on the famous Kaanapali Beach. Dubbed 'luxury condominiums,' the Kaanapali Alii is the perfect place to bring a family. Condos inside the resort sleep up to six, and come equipped with a full kitchen so you can still enjoy your home cooking (and save money by dining in). Outside, a beachside recreation area boasts a grill, two pools, gym, tennis courts and sauna. Kaanapali beach, a one mile stretch of sand on Maui's west coast, presents optimal sun-bathing and wave-playing opportunities right outside your doorstep. Whaler's Village, known for its premium stores and restaurants, is just a few steps away.

Marriott's Maui Ocean Club

Marriott

Residing on the shallow end of Kaanapali Beach Resort, Marriott's Maui Ocean Club holds the title of our number eight resort. Boasting comfortable and well-adorned rooms and suites, the Marriott sits right on the beach and close to Whaler's Village and Kaanapali golfing. Its biggest draw, however, is its 3.5 acre 'superpool.' Grottos, waterfalls, waterslides, and a children's area featuring a fake shipwreck sit beneath a plethora of palm trees. While the kids play pirate, you may retreat to the poolside bar for lava flows and mai tais.

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa

The Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa, coming in at number seven on our list, is also located on Kaanapali's expansive stretch of beach. Covering 40 acres, the Hyatt is beautifully decorated inside and out. It is equipped with all of the same amenities as the Marriott, including a fantastically impressive pool. Where it trumps the Marriott is with its spa. Hyatt's famous Spa Moana is right on the ocean and outfitted with an athletic club, full-service salon, and 15 treatment rooms. Its claim is that through treatment each individual is infused with the 'Hawaiian values of lokahi (unity), maluhia (peace), ikaika (strength), maemae (purity).'

Sheraton Maui Resort and Spa

Sheraton Maui Resort and Spa

Rounding out our first five resorts is the king of all Kaanapali resorts, the Sheraton Maui Resort and Spa. The Sheraton resides at the foot of Black Rock, the focal point of Kaanapali beach. Pu'u Keka'a, or black rock, is known as the spot where Maui's last chief, Kahekili (Thunderer), dove, to prove his spiritual strength. Today, the Sheraton celebrates the history of black rock nightly with a ceremonial sunset cliff dive. Black Rock's base is famous for snorkeling, as well as for watching divers rush by as they land in the Pacific. Beyond its prime beachfront real estate, the Sheraton caters to weary travelers with its 'seamless check-in.' Upon arrival, you and your luggage are ushered straight to your room, skipping any front desk hassles.

Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua

Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua

Unlike many in our top ten, our number two sits untouched by neighboring resorts. The Ritz-Carlton in Kapalua, on Maui's northwest side, encompasses the dramatic cliffs and peninsulas of Honokahua Bay. The Ritz's immaculate property earns its number two status from its beauty and seclusion beneath the west Maui Mountains. Set on an old pineapple plantation, the Ritz has everything the luxury-minded traveler could ask for. Two golf courses, tennis courts, an opulent spa, and five-star dining await your arrival. The huge, winding pool overlooking the ocean is flanked by cabanas and palm trees. The interior decoration lends an elegant and tropical feel to the hotel.
