A tourist destination since the 1800s, whalers would visit Lahaina Town for rest and recuperation after long voyages in the North Pacific. Today, downtown Lahaina bursts with boutiques, art galleries and restaurants—a wonderful place to spend a relaxing day away from the beach.
Maui's famous art scene finds its heart in Lahaina, with art galleries being one of the biggest draws to the town. Browse scenic photos from Peter Lik, surreal paintings by Vladamir Kush or Peter Maxx, or sculptures by environmental artist Christian Riese Lassen. Celebrities Fine Art Gallery features artwork by, whom else, celebrities. Gaze upon artwork by John Lennon, Jeff Bridges and Jerry Garcia before continuing your trek down Lahaina's front street.
Lahaina has numerous clothing shops. Billabong, Quicksilver and Honolua Surf Company can help you out with beachwear, while Maggie Coulombe, Serendipity, and Moonbow Tropics will dress you up for a night on the town. Sunglass Hut, Jessica's Gems, or Na Hoku jewelry will provide the accessories.
Perhaps you're in need of the perfect island souvenir. Maui Hands has ceramics, prints and jewelry made by local artisans. At Lahaina Scrimshaw, you can pick up an engraved walrus fossil or whale's tail-shaped pendant. Of course, Hilo Hattie is the place to go for a box of chocolate macadamia nuts or dashboard hula girl.
Before you leave, take in Lahaina's stunning sunset. Pick up a Hawaiian shave ice from Ululani's and take a seat on one of the benches overlooking the ocean for a show in dazzling colors.
