In the ways of art, Maui has a plethora of events, galleries, and creators that call the island home. But don't forget to look in a less likely placeā€”the Maui Swap Meet. Established almost 30 years ago on Pu'unene Ave, this gathering of crafters and growers recently moved to a new location at UH Maui College to accommodate the large number of vendors and shoppers who flock to the meet each weekend.

Worried that you haven't found that perfect gift for a loved one? Try out this weekend hotspot, where you'll see everything from '40s antiques and modern wall art to fragrant leis and every type of t-shirt imaginable. The swap meet is a great place to find fragrant soaps or lotions that will keep your memories of Maui alive long after you've left. If collectibles are more your thing, plenty of vendors can cater to your needs. And if it's that ubiquitous ukelele or hammock you're looking for, the meet has you covered. The brochure even claims that this marvelous place has your long lost aunt or uncle.

Be sure to grab some mouth-watering baked goods while you're at it, otherwise the sweet smells will drive you wild. Vendors carry the likes of jams, cookies, coffee, and pizza. If your lodgings include a kitchen, here's where you go to pick up some low-priced, weekend produce packed with flavor. Some vendors even carry hydroponic veggies. Even if you're kitchenless, a stop at the swap meet will herald the perfect fixings for a beach picnic, with ethnic foods and bento boxes around every corner.

But don't feel you have to empty your wallet to have fun here. Many come just for the rousing, but still laid-back atmosphere that exudes from this weekly gathering. Chat with the vendors and locals and learn a little background about this tiny island you might not get elsewhere. All anyone asks in return is a little story of your own. Just remember, you may not be on the beach, but you still need your sunscreen.
