Named after King Kamehameha I's favorite and most politically influential wife, the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center is one of Maui's largest shopping centers. Located in Kahului, the center is home to restaurants, a movie theater, and stores – a few of which are unique to Hawai'i.
More than just a mall, the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center provides a location for many special events. In January 2009, the Center hosted Tibetan Buddhist monks for six days as they created an authentic sand mandala. More regularly, hula shows, zumba demonstrations, and musical theater productions take place on the stage in the center of the mall. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM shoppers can find fresh, locally grown produce at the Maui Fresh Produce Farmers Market. There is also an indoor playground for kids. A Hawai'i State ID will get you a kama'aina (the Hawaiian word for a long-time resident, literally means "child of the land") discount at most of the stores.
