Despite its illustrious location on the Atlantic Ocean, New York City is not particularly known for its recreational boating. That does not mean, however, that there aren't great opportunities to enjoy your human-powered boat; you just have to know where to look—and how much you'll have to pay. The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation maintains several kayaking sites along the New York City Water Trail, 160 square miles of rivers, creeks and the ocean. Detailed information about the park's sites, as well as non-park kayak sites, can be found on the department's website: www.nycgovparks.org. They also provide a complete list of rules and regulations and a permit application for canoeing and kayaking in New York City.
