The last of the grey winter sludge has melted from Manhattan's streets, the flowers are blooming, and perhaps most importantly, the sun is shining and warming the air. To partake in sun worship and catch a tan, head to Central Park for some free rays and lush nature.
While the Great Lawn, located at the center of the park between 80th and 84th Streets, is an obvious and very popular choice for sunbathers, there are other (perhaps greener) pastures. The East Green at 72nd street and the East Meadow at 100th Street are both great locations for tanning and sometimes offer a bit more privacy and breathing room. The Sheep Meadow on the west side of the park between 67th and 71st streets is a popular spot for getting tan while working on your laptop, since WiFi is available.
Sunbathers can catch the same sun outside of Central Park, though. Popular spots include Rockefeller Park, Dyckman Fields, Union Square and Bryant Park. For sunbathing near water, check out Clinton Cove Park, Fort Tryon Park, Pier 45 and Ferry State Park.
When sunbathing in a public area, be sure to use common sense and etiquette. Nudity is illegal in public. Sunbathing on or near a ball field makes your bikini-clad body a target for stray balls and athletes prepared to trample anything in their path. Also, stay healthy by hydrating and using plenty of sunscreen; lying out in the park may not feel as intense as the beach, but it's the same sun no matter where you go.
