Tucked among the daunting skyscrapers of New York's Financial District, Trinity Church beckons passersby with its 23-bell tower, high-reaching spire, and wide bronze-laden doors. This Gothic Revival-style structure, consecrated in 1846, is the third church to occupy Wall Street and Broadway since the Parish of Trinity Church was established in 1697.
Architect Richard Upjohn designed and built the current Trinity Church after the first burned down and the second was demolished for structural reasons. Once inside, behold the glory of open space, elegantly garnished with arched beams, stained glass windows, and a magnificent reredos, or decorative wall, carved from sandstone and marble. Upjohn purposely left the majority of the walls bare to keep the main worship space free of clutter. He reserved a monument room in the south side of the church for commemorating influential church members such as Alexander Hamilton, who's buried outside in the Trinity Churchyard along with William Bradford and Robert Fulton.
In addition to serving as a national historic site, Trinity Church accommodates daily services, weddings, and baptisms. The parish promotes Christian fellowship and sponsors outreach such as AA and 12-step programs, low-income housing for the elderly, and a drop-in center for the homeless. The church is also known for hosting professional and contemporary concerts as well as choirs from within the parish and across the world. You'll be surprised to happen upon this beaming symbol of spirituality among the dollar signs looming on all sides.
