Standing prominently on the East River, Gracie Mansion demonstrates the hardy American elegance of federal-style architecture and decor. Built in 1799 by wealthy shipping merchant Archibald Gracie, this historic gem is one of Manhattan's oldest wooden structures.

Symmetrical columns and double-paned windows adorn the façade. The foyer's trompe-l'oeil floor dazzles visitors at first step. Ornate chandeliers, unique by room, illuminate much of the mansion. Antique clocks, whale oil lamps, shelving, and mantels provide a sense of history and charm. Rooms such as the patent yellow parlor and the teal library, complete with coordinated carpeting and walls, reveal an effortless sense of class. Finely crafted furniture and fixtures complete the flawless looks of each space.

In addition to passing through the hands of three private owners, Gracie Mansion has assumed a mishmash of roles – from ice cream parlor and Carl Schurz Park restroom to the Museum of the City of New York's first site and home to several city mayors.

Today, the mansion is owned by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and is known as "the people's house," with increased access to public and city agencies upon a 2002 restoration. In addition to public tours, the mansion also accommodates visiting officials, mayoral meetings and functions. The Gracie Mansion Conservancy, a private not-for-profit organization established in 1981, oversees the preservation, restoration, and maintenance of this centuries-old masterpiece.
