With over 100,000 photographs in its permanent collection, the museum at the International Center of Photography is one of the most concentrated collections of American and European documentary photography of the 1900s. Featuring artists like Robert Capa (whose brother Cornell founded ICP in 1974), Gordon Parks, Garry Winogrand, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, the museum also spans the entire photographic gamut, showcasing mediums such as gelatin silver and daguerreotypes while highlighting photographs from selected World War I and II magazines.
From its inception in 1974 to its 2000 relocation to 1133 Avenue of the Americas, ICP Museum was part of Fifth Avenue's Museum Mile. On top of the museum's permanent collection, ICP has shown over 500 exhibits, mostly of the humanitarian and documentary exposure, highlighting the works of famed artists such as Annie Leibowitz, Larry Clark, and Ansel Adams.
ICP also boasts a well-regarded school offering full-time, continuing education, and Masters programs. The Midtown campus was designed by the architecture firm Gensler and sits across the street from the museum at 1114 Avenue of the Americas. Below this Louvre-like glass building sits the expansive school facilities as well as the city's only library devoted to photography. Students and scholars from all over the globe come here to check out the nearly 15,000 volumes available.
