With its iconic Beaux-Arts façade, the Metropolitan Museum of Art could easily fit among legendary European museums. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, though, is a distinctly American -- and New York -- experience, with its melting pot of art and artifacts from across time and the world. Don't let the museum's imposing columns and marble staircase intimidate you; instead allow them to usher you toward an endless array of breath-taking exhibits.
The museum, fondly referred to as the Met, features 19 permanent collections, guaranteeing that even the most blasé visitor will be amazed. Within almost a quarter mile of space, visitors can travel from Paleolithic Egypt to the Roman Empire to the Neolithic Near East. The Met also features a comprehensive collection of calligraphy, art, and ritual objects from China, Nepal, and Tibet. A unique compilation of musical instruments, a revolving display of costumes, and a wide selection of weapons and armory are exhibits of particular note. Naturally, American artists and the "Old Masters" of Europe, including Van Gogh, Monet, and Rembrandt, enjoy a cozy corner within the museum.
A brief overview, or a brief visit, hardly does justice to the depth and array of artifacts. To fully explore the Met, set aside a day, or two, for leisurely perusal. Every month features around six special exhibits that typically fall within the museum's focus on ancient artifacts, from porcelain plates to intricate books. The special exhibits, along with occasional free events, increase the need for multiple visits for the complete Metropolitan Museum of Art experience.
