Sex, long considered a private topic, is now a very public subject of NYC discussion and entertainment. For those of us that have spent years wondering about sexual issues but hiding our concerns, the Museum of Sex can provide an answer to all our questions about the history, evolution, and cultural significance of human sexuality. Since its opening in 2002, it has housed 14 exhibitions and five additional virtual exhibitions. The museum is committed to exploring a wide range of topics on sex and sexuality from the vantage point of various cultures. Visitors have access to over 15,000 sexually related artifacts in the mediums of art, photography, clothing and costumes, historical objects, and technological innovations.
With sex now a more acceptable subject of art and conversation, the Museum of Sex features a variety of artists whose exhibits explore a wide range of sexual thinking and discovery. In its permanent collection, the museum boasts a plentiful assortment of vintage condoms, vibrators, and men's magazines. A current exhibition by Michael Grecco entitled "Naked Ambition" explores the modern day porn industry through photography. The exhibition touches on the obvious sexuality of the subject matter, but delves deeper into the minds and everyday lives of today's porn stars.
In February, a new exhibition, "Rubbers; the life, history, and struggle of the condom," focusing on the device's historical significance and cultural ramifications. Through various artifacts—including a London nightclub's dress made entirely of condoms—the exhibit touches on the topics of religion, politics, health, and certainly, pleasure.
In addition to the ongoing development of new exhibitions, the Museum of Sex houses a research library as well as a media library dedicated to the study of sex. Don't forget to browse the gift shop for a host of creative and scandalous gift items. The shop sells a variety of sex toys, books, gadgets, and art, including Kama Sutra cookie cutters, a "Position of the Day" how-to manual, and anatomical origami sets.
