The Knitting Factory, founded in 1987 by Michael Dorf and Bob Appel, has evolved from a small art gallery with a performance space to a hugely popular experimental music venue with concert locations in Boise, Idaho and Spokane, Washington and Reno, Nevada. A location is also planned to open in December of 2009, in addition to its original space in New York City. Although the Knitting Factory recently moved from its Tribeca location in lower Manhattan to its new, larger home in the Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn, the small, dark space and the energy of the crowd create an electricity only felt in the most cramped and rowdy music venues.
The Knitting Factory's history as a mecca for alternative music also contributes to its electric atmosphere. Respected alternative artists such as Sonic Youth, the Bouncing Souls, and Yo La Tengo have played at this well-known venue. Since its big move to Williamsburg in September 2009, the Knitting Factory has continued to host a plethora of mainstream and independent bands and artists, as well as stand-up comedy performances, launch parties, and other assorted live acts. Although the new location is considerably smaller than its old Tribeca location, big names in alternative music continue to be drawn to the legacy of the Knitting Factory. Diverse upcoming performers include post-hardcore bigwigs Hawthorne Heights and ska/reggae get-up the Slackers. Be sure to check www.knittingfactory.com often for all upcoming performances.
