Bryant Park is not a typical park. It is not a natural expanse of grass and gardens, and at just over nine acres, the privately-managed public park has just one lawn surrounded by concrete. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in activities, offering a dizzying schedule of events, coordinated by the apparently tireless nonprofit Bryant Park Corporation.
Depending on the time of year, one can expect Bryant Park to be a free-admission ice-skating rink called The Pond, a holiday shopping center, an outdoor movie theatre, a fashion show venue, a concert hall, an ornithological observatory, an open air reading room, a yoga and Tai Chi studio, or just a simple picnic ground. With the exception of the twice annual fashion shows, all events in Bryant Park are free and open to the public. For a complete calendar of events, check out the website below.
Year round, the park serves as the backyard of the New York Public Library. Book lovers can often be spotted on the lawn, enjoying a recently-loaned novel. The two attractions are located between 5th and 6th Avenues and 40th and 42nd Streets. Free WiFi access is available within the park.
