The Joyce Theater

Founded in 1982, the Joyce Theater is to dance as the Met is to opera. With its location in the heart of Chelsea, this former porn theater-turned-premiere contemporary performance venue has housed almost 300 groups, from NY-based modern dance companies to internationally renowned Flamenco dancers.

Architect Hugh Hardy was brought on to renovate the exterior of the 1940s Elgin Theater but preserved the building's original art deco façade in the process. Acoustical engineers and consultants assisted in replacing the interior with 472 well-positioned seats and a more elegant look. The project was financially backed by LuEsther T. Mertz, part of the Publisher's Clearing House clan, who named this new landmark after her daughter, Joyce.

Another exciting endeavor for the Joyce came in 1996 with the purchasing of additional space in SoHo – a three-story building used for rehearsals and smaller performances. With a focus on highlighting new and upcoming choreographers, the Joyce continues its mission of producing high quality art readily available for younger audiences and seasoned dance-lovers as well.
