Located in Union Square on East 12th St. and Broadway lies an oasis for book lovers and knowledge seekers, literature enthusiasts, history buffs, and just about anyone looking to be inspired. Holding true to its famous slogan "18 miles of books," the Strand Bookstore comprises three-and-a-half floors of used and hard-to-find books and is one of the world's largest used bookstores.
Opened by Benjamin Bass in 1927, the Strand has been spoiling book lovers for over 80 years with its abundance of rare titles and out-of-print selections. Whether your interest lies in French symbolist poetry or Southeast Asian history, you will find what you are looking for (and more) on the disarrayed shelves of this vast treasure chest.
Check the Strand's website for a calendar of special events including readings, signings, and discussions of some of the most prominent and unique up-and-coming titles. With its wide selection ranging from Art/Architecture to Photography to Medical/Health, just try to walk out empty-handed.
