Visit the vast plains of Africa, explore the hidden treasures of lush Asian jungles, or come face-to-face with an aardvark. At the Bronx Zoo, which features more than 4000 animals, guests can travel across the whole world without ever leaving New York City. Founded by the Wildlife Conservation Society, this wildlife haven first opened in 1899 and has been dedicated to educating the public about birds, mammals, and reptiles alike. With almost 2 million people visiting the zoo every year, it was designated a New York City landmark in 2000.

The Bronx Zoo offers an array of exhibits, attractions, and special events that keep visitors coming back time and again. Some highlights includes Madagascar!, which introduces guests to cave-dwelling Nile crocodiles, adorable lemurs, and hissing cockroaches, all in creatively constructed habitats that replicate their place of origin, and Congo Gorilla Forest, a riveting wildlife safari through treetops, mist, and leaves of the jungle, combined with an exploration deep into the arid plains of Africa, where western lowland gorillas rambunctiously play right before your eyes. After the exhibits, enjoy a camel ride around Wild Asia Plaza, perfect for all ages, weather permitting. If you have younger adventurers in your crowd, be sure to check out the Children's Zoo, which features three acres of hands-on activities that allow children close access to some of the more approachable wildlife species. They can experience authentic animal habitats and run their hands along soft fur and wet noses as they feed barnyard animals like sheep and llamas. Peek your head into the Mouse House to meet unique and often adorable rodents such as chinchillas, porcupines, and flying squirrels.

The Bronx Zoo also offers a variety of cafes and food stands, as well as summer and youth programs dedicated to preserving wildlife and habitats through education and appreciation for the natural world. Special events such as sea lion and penguin feedings change daily, so be sure to check the website frequently. During the summer, zoo parking lots can fill up very quickly, but parking is available in other close lots or at nearby Fordham University. However, public transit is encouraged.
