This year marks the 35th anniversary of DanceAfrica! Created in 1977 by Chuck Davis, it is the nation’s first festival devoted to African dance and has become one of the largest celebrations of its kind—uniting dancers the world over to celebrate the cultural vitality of Africa and its diaspora. Joseph V. Melillo, executive producer of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, announced programming for the BAM 2012 Winter/Spring Season, which runs from January 10th through June 3rd, 2012. The season comprises nine theater, dance, and nouveau cirque engagements and features BAMcinématek series, BAMcafé Live weekend music events, artist talks, visual art exhibitions, and literary events.

Week One begins with Brian Brooks Moving Company in the premiere of BIG CITY, a work that examines the concept of rebuilding after a destructive event. An Open Rehearsal is a fascinating opportunity to watch the New York Philharmonic at work, and see how a piece of music is shaped and polished by the conductor and the musicians. Open Rehearsals begin at 9:45am (except where noted) in Avery Fisher Hall, and end at approximately 12:30pm (sometimes extending to 1pm, at the discretion of the conductor). Open rehearsals will run from September 21st, 2011 - June 20th, 2012.

The Trisha Brown Dance Company: Astral Converted will be at the Park Avenue Armory from July 10th - 14th, 2012. Legendary choreographer Trisha Brown brings her company to the Armory’s Drill Hall for the restaging of Astral Converted, with visual and costume design by Robert Rauschenberg and original music by John Cage. Rauschenberg’s metal frame towers, restored for this production, house the lights and sound system and are built from automotive supplies. The towers are activated by motion sensors to detect the dancers and respond to their movement.- View Event >
