Stock the cooler, grab the umbrella, pack those beach necessities and head to Jones Beach State Park, one of New York's most famous playgrounds. Since its opening in 1929, the 6.5-mile soft, sandy shoreline has served as an aquatic oasis for millions of beach goers.

As you approach the ocean, the strong, salty scent of the Atlantic makes you feel a world away from "The City That Never Sleeps." Once you claim your spot on the beach, dive head first into the surf and let your worries drift out to sea. Ocean temperatures rise into the low 70s during the summer months and will leave you feeling invigorated.

After you tire of frolicking in the refreshing ocean, lie on your towel, close your eyes and let the sun's rays warm you up. Listen to the seagulls chirp as they soar high above you, hear the waves drum down the sugary sand and taste the remnants of salt water on your lips. At Jones Beach, you'll be one with nature.

Not really the beach bum type? No problem! The 2,413-acre park has two pools where you can swim until your fingertips become pruned. Afterwards, play miniature golf and shuffleboard or shoot some hoops on the basketball courts. Still not impressed? Take a stroll on the two-mile boardwalk, grab a bite to eat at one of the many eateries and visit the gift shop.

If you're a music buff (and who isn't?), then you'll be happy to hear that the park is home to Jones Beach Theater, one of the most scenic outdoor concert venues in the New York metropolitan area. From late May to early September of each year, many well-known artists rock out on the 104-foot stage. Buy tickets to your favorite artist's performance at the Jones Beach website listed below.
