New York's most famous parade may be the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, but the annual Saint Patrick's Day Parade deserves a nod for its own merits as well. The upcoming NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade will take place on Saturday, March 17th, 2012. See the event listing here.

That's right, St Patrick's Day is getting closer and closer and at MeanRed they've thoughtfully concocted a party of epic proportions to ensure that you can appreciate your unlimited supply of booze in a completely safe and super fun environment. Alcoholiday will take place at Loreley Restaurant and Biergarten on Saturday, March 17th, 2012 from 9pm - 4am.

Clichés are clichés for a reason…they're true and they work and they just are. New York, as wacky and shape-shifting as it may seem, is refuge to a timeless abundance of clichés that draw so many out-of-towners here. Its commitment to fame and fortune. Its lights and tidal restlessness. However, nobody wants to be a cliché, and over the years, New York and New Yorkers alike have found ways to function outside of the cliché bubble. We've tweaked the cliché and formed our own versions of clichés that are cooler and off-beat.

Here are some to avoid and few to embrace:

1. Don't come here with a fanny pack full of preconceived notions that New Yorkers are mean. We're not that bad. In fact, most of us will stop and help you find your way east or west and some of us dare to decorate our directional help with a friendly suggestion or two. Don't hesitate to ask just because some of us walk faster than you run and most of us wear headphones and avoid eye contact; we only do so to block out the city noises that make your skin quiver and to evade creeps selling rusty umbrellas and used scarves. We're just like you, but we're seasoned.

2. On the contrary, don't come here starry eyed, cuddling with the warm fuzzy feeling that New Yorkers are your best friends. Like anywhere, people can be mean. If someone yells at you for walking slowly, try not to take it too offensively, it's just that most (if not all) of us are rushing to get somewhere. We have bad days, like you have bad days. We run late, we hit subway and street traffic like you hit car traffic. Throw us the benefit of the doubt; however don't stop to take a picture in the middle of a sidewalk. It's not only rude, but you will most definitely see more of the ugly, monstrous side of New Yorkers as opposed to the ones who will stop on the side of the road and snap your photo in front of the Flat Iron building.

3. Times Square. I know they call it one of the most amazing places in the world, and truthfully, it is pretty awesome. However, it looks like it looks in pictures, except when you're viewing the Square through a 4 x 6 as opposed to actually standing in the center of it, you will avoid all the other tourists and weirdos walking in circles as though chasing their own tale, or, for that matter, a drug induced butterfly. If you're going to go, visit sometime past midnight, but other than that, check out some of the other neighborhoods Manhattan has to offer – all of which DGuides features in pursuit of neighborhood strengths and weaknesses. They're way cooler, much cheaper and although it's still busy New York, I mean it when I say it, anywhere is better than Times Square.

4. Coffee Shops. Even though Carrie Bradshaw never took her laptop to a café to sit and do her writing, almost every other working New Yorker does or has been documented doing so in fiction and non-fiction movies alike. It's a nice idea, and a pleasant thought…the notion that you will be able to sit comfortably for that long and actually be productive as opposed to being so remarkably distracted by all the people around you that you wind up people-watching and refrain from doing anything productive. The curser will blink and blink and blink at you while you scarf your muffin and sip your smoothie, and the next thing you know the café is filled to the brim and you're completely over the people watching part of your day that you loved up until an hour ago, and you are packing up your things like a soccer mom at a game when the first signs of rain appear. Work inside. Work in your happy place, a private space. Trust me; the coffee shop artist looks so much better on TV.

5. CELEBRITIES EVERYWHERE! No, not really. Most celebrities that want to be seen everywhere go live in LA. New York celebrities are under the radar. Most of them have families and gigantic, unaffordable condos on the Upper West Side and focus on dropping their children off at school in the morning. They aren't glammed-up, probably have no make-up on, and they just want to do their thing and stay out of anybody's way. Sometimes you'll see the occasional commercial star at a local bar, but the rest of them, the big-dogs, they're embracing their downtime and secrecy, and New York gifts them with this 'luxury'. Your best bet is memorizing the faces and names of your favorite Broadway, or Off-Off Broadway, or Off-Off-Off-Off-Off Broadway stars because they're the ones you'll see wandering the streets of Hells Kitchen. Your other best bet is going to the Wax Museum, because honestly, that's probably the closest you'll get to Brangelina while visiting New York.

Don't get me wrong, we love tourists and we love looking like resident New Yorkers in front of tourists, but we won't revert back to being the cliché we were when we first got here, and hopefully once you've spent a day-or-so on the island, you can join us in that notion.

The grand reopening of a suite of 15 dramatic New Galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia took place at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on November 1st, 2011. The greatly enlarged, freshly conceived, and completely renovated galleries house the Metropolitan’s renowned collection of Islamic art—one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of this material in the world. Design features within the new space highlight both the diversity and the interconnectedness of the numerous cultures represented here; multiple entryways allow visitors to approach the new galleries—and the art displayed within—from different perspectives.

The collection comprises more than 12,000 works of art drawn from an area that extends from Spain in the west to India in the east. Some 1,200 works of art in all media will be on view at any time, representing all major regions and artistic styles, from the seventh century onward. Important loans from the Hispanic Society of America will also be shown.
