The grand reopening of a suite of 15 dramatic New Galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia took place at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on November 1st, 2011. The greatly enlarged, freshly conceived, and completely renovated galleries house the Metropolitan’s renowned collection of Islamic art—one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of this material in the world. Design features within the new space highlight both the diversity and the interconnectedness of the numerous cultures represented here; multiple entryways allow visitors to approach the new galleries—and the art displayed within—from different perspectives.

The collection comprises more than 12,000 works of art drawn from an area that extends from Spain in the west to India in the east. Some 1,200 works of art in all media will be on view at any time, representing all major regions and artistic styles, from the seventh century onward. Important loans from the Hispanic Society of America will also be shown.
2. Explore Eataly, a 50,000-square-foot space brought to New Yorkers by three of the top Italian-American restaurateurs in the Nation: Mario Batali, Joe Bastianich, and Lidia Matticchio. Founded by Oscar Farinetti, and located in the lobby of the Toy Building (200 Fifth Ave. between 23rd and 24th streets) in the Flatiron District, Eataly features multiple restaurants, including a fine dining Italian steakhouse called Manzo, a Neapolitan pizzeria, and a year round rooftop beer garden and microbrewery. eatalyny.com/

3. Sunday Brunch at Calle Ocho. Come to Calle Ocho on the Upper West Side on Sundays for brunch and enjoy eight types of unlimited sangria with the purchase of 1 entree. Brunch Entree's range from $14 – $16. www.calleochonyc.com

Free Pizza. Get a free pizza with every beer at the Alligator Lounge in Williamsburg (between Lorimer St & Leonard St — Just take the G or L line to Metropolitan Ave-Lorimer St). Visit Yelp for more info.

6. More Free Pizza at Naples. During happy hour at Naples, the free pies keep coming - when you see it come out, grab a plate. Nothing better than a thin-crusted slice to accompany your Perroni. Naples 45 was awarded the coveted certification of "La Vera Pizza Napoletana," in recognition of serving authentic Neapolitan pizza made with traditional ingredients, methods, and wood-burning ovens - one of only two such awards in New York City. www.patinagroup.com

7. New York City's oldest continuously operated saloon. McSorley's Old Ale House. On entry you'll feel as if you've stepped into a pub in Galway, Ireland: bits of sawdust at your feet, a little sunlight peering through the dusty windows, and just two kinds of house beers. Order two at a time, light and dark; they're half pints and they go down fast. www.mcsorleysnewyork.com

8. Margaritas at Zarela's. Ask what flavors they have, as they change frequently. Fresh fruit purees of raspberries, strawberries, pomegranate and mango are piled high in large wine glasses and topped with a mixture of tequila, salt and sour mix. Yes, they are $10 each, but you'll only manage two. Trust us. www.zarela.com

9. Explore NYC's Wine Bars. Wine bars in NYC have gained extraordinary popularity in the past few years. Like local coffee shops and low-key bars, wine bars provide a casual atmosphere to meet friends for a drink and a snack. Wine bars range in price, food selection, size of wine list, and crowd.

10. Go to an Open Mic-Night. New York City is the place where people go to make their dreams come true, so you might even catch a glimpse of a fledgling star. Most of these fill up pretty quickly, so make sure you get there early. Here's our picks.

11. NYC's top BYOB (Bring your own bottle, or booze, or beer) restaurants. We've compiled a list of the ten best restaurants in the city with BYOB policies. You won't only save money, but you'll get some awesome food, too. Cheap and delicious: what more could you ask for?

12. Learn a little about beer. Did you know that there are about 8,000 different types of beer in all of NYC's many bars? Mr. O'Leary, a "beer geek" who brews in his East Village apartment, has put together a blog about craft beer, beer bars, homebrewing, and beer culture in the New York Area. brewyorknewyork.com

13. Free wine tastings at many of NYC's wine shops. Manhattan isn't the cheapest place to drink. We all know that. So we've put together a list of wine shops that offer free tastings.

14. Get a burger at Shake Shack, (a Danny Meyer burger joint) in Madison Square, hands down NYC's best burger place. The lines tend to be long, but it's definitely worth the wait! There's also a Shake Shack on the Upper West Side at 366 Columbus Ave. www.shakeshacknyc.com

15. Have a burger at the Burger Joint at Le Parker Meridien. Burger Joint is literally hidden behind a curtain in the lobby of this posh hotel, and remains a beloved burger sanctuary in Midtown. www.parkermeridien.com. Four stars with over 1,000 votes on Yelp.

16. Go to one of NYC's best Rooftop Bars for some awesome views. We've compiled a list of the ten best rooftop bars in the city, where there are nothing but cold drinks, open air, and gorgeous views of the city that never sleeps.

17. Do some Karaoke. New York City, home to some of the most talented singers in the world, also offers musical refuge to the not-so-vocally-endowed in its abundance of karaoke bars. Here's out list.

18. Explore NYC's Chocolate Shops. Fans of dark, white, or milk: this city isn't lacking an abundance of chocolately treats. If you're a chocolate lover, don't miss out on some of NY's most scrumptious chocolate shops. Here are 10 of the city's best shops.

19. Explore NYC's Cupcake Shops. Manhattan's chaotic world of deadlines and appointments, congested streets and tourist crowds, sometimes you just need to sit back, relax, and enjoy the high of a good, old-fashioned sugar rush. Here are ten of the best places around.

20. Go to "Science, Cocktails and Conversation" at SciCafe at the Natural History Museum every Wednesday at 7pm. Free entry with cash bar. www.amnh.org/calendar/series/SciCafe

21. See Dylan's Candy Store -- opened by Ralph Lauren's daughter. You won't find Oompa Loompas or a chocolate river here, but you will find one of the biggest (and most creative) selections of candy in all of Manhattan and the world. www.dylanscandybar.com

22. Go on a Santa Pub Crawl. For the over-21 crowd, this holiday season you can follow Santa and his drunken little helpers to local bars for the Santa Pub Crawl. www.spcnyc.com

23. Take a free tour of the Brooklyn Brewery. If you have a Saturday or Sunday free, the brewery gives a complimentary hour-long tour of its facilities between 1-4 pm. On Fridays, you're welcome to bring your own food while you sip on some micro-brewed draft beer. The beer isn't free, but at five beers for $20, and a sixth one free, most people won't mind spending a few bucks for some quality hops. www.brooklynbrewery.com

24. Go to the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden in Astoria. This is the oldest Beer Garden in NYC (100 years old!) It's a pretty easy subway ride from Manhattan. Just take the N or Q trains to Astoria Boulevard. Check out HopStop.com for subway directions. It's like Map Quest for Public Transport. www.bohemianhall.com

Shopping

Photo © The Brooklyn Flea Market

25. Go to Canal Street in Chinatown Perhaps it's the thrill of the hunt; perhaps it's the chance to buy "designer" merchandise for a fraction of the price. Either way, people journey to Canal Street in Chinatown every day where vendors both legitimate and illegal sell their wares to herds of shoppers in tiny stores along the overcrowded sidewalks, and occasionally in "secret locations" off the main street.

26. Go to the Brooklyn Flea Market. During winter the Flea never stops—they just move indoors. They've announced their return to the majestic Skylight One Hanson space at the former Williamsburg Savings Bank for the third winter run. From November 26th & 27th, 2011 through March 31st & April 1st, 2012, the market will be open every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm at Skylight One Hanson (except Christmas and New Year's weekends when it will be closed). The market features 100 vendors inside the landmark Williamsburg Savings Bank. In addition to moving indoors to Skylight One Hanson, the Flea and Brooklyn Brewery will launch SmorgasBrewery on Sunday, December 4th, 2011: a mini-Smorgasburg featuring a rotating cast of five Flea/Smorg food vendors serving inside the Brewery's Tasting Room on North 11th St. in Williamsburg. The weekly feast will coincide with the Brewery's regular Sunday hours (noon–6pm), which include free brewery tours on the hour. SmorgasBrewery will run from noon to 5pm, and is scheduled to last through March 2012. www.brooklynflea.com

27. Bedford Avenue Flea Market in Williamsburg Brooklyn The Market is located inside a 3,000-square-foot building. Artists & Fleas Artist, Designer & Vintage Market is a weekly Williamsburg Brooklyn market where emerging and independent artists, designers, vintage collectors and DIYers can showcase their wares, set up shop and meet their market. The market is open every Saturday & Sunday from 10am - 7pm. artistsandfleas.com

28. Shop Smith Street, Brooklyn. Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, and Carroll Gardens: These three small communities in northern Brooklyn form "BoCoCa," one of the many recently gentrified areas in the borough. BoCoCa has always been known for its beautiful tree-lined streets, though only in recent years have hip twenty-somethings and toddlers with their stylish moms emerged from the picturesque brownstones. The area is historically Italian, and family-owned restaurants, delis and hardware stores tenaciously remain amidst the trendy new inhabitants and businesses. The result is a charming combination between new world and old world Brooklyn, so BoCoCa feels a bit like a mix between the East Village, the Upper West Side, and Little Italy
