The Upper West Side: Manhattan's home of pre-war architecture, countless museums and performing arts venues, and coveted brownstones. Lincoln Center calls this culturally rich neighborhood home, as do Columbia University, the Museum of Natural History, and Strawberry Fields, the Central Park memorial to John Lennon. With its affluent and artistic population, it's only fitting that the Upper West Side also boasts a slew of upscale boutiques on the picturesque Columbus Avenue.

Though there are a few chain stores on Columbus (Sephora, Patagonia, Club Monaco), the area maintains stylish charm with small boutiques boasting big names in fashion, like AG Adriano Goldschmied and Betsey Johnson. AG sells high-quality denim that flatters every body type, while Betsey Johnson is known for her wildly colorful dresses. New York franchises like youthful Olive and Bette's and always-trendy Intermix also have homes on the Upper West Side.

From the high-60s into the 80s on Columbus Avenue, there are dozens of sweet stores that are sure to leave your heart happy (and, if you're not careful, your wallet empty). At Only Hearts, owner Helena Stuart sells her own line of "inner outerwear," lingerie that can double as street wear, as well as intimates by designers like Vera Wang and Alberta Ferretti. Mint, a brightly colored boutique with a friendly staff, sells youthful apparel that mimics today's trends but carries a more affordable price tag. BOC, on the other hand, is chock full of clothes and accessories by the hottest designers, including Tracey Reese, James Perse and Foley + Corinna. Jonathan Adler has a playfully chic selection of furniture and home goods, while Gas Bijoux sells an elegant selection of handcrafted French jewelry.

If you happen to be in the neighborhood on a Sunday, be sure to get to the Greenflea Market. Located at the MS 44 Junior High., this indoor-outdoor flea market sells hand-crafted furniture and vintage apparel and jewelry. If you love digging for thrifty and one-of-a-kind items, Greenflea is your place.

For a post-shopping bite, there are a plethora of options in the neighborhood. Alice's Tea Cup is a delightful tearoom on 73rd Street that is designed as an Alice in Wonderland storybook. Little girls love the atmosphere, but adults find it charming, too. In addition to offering incredible house-made scones, they also have a tea list with hundreds of teas to choose from. For a mid-day splurge, Isabella's offers one of the most coveted brunches in the city. Pappardella, also on Columbus, serves reasonably priced and deliciously fresh Italian food. On a nice day, the outdoor seating at Pappardella is ideal.
