Rocky coastlines, dormant volcanoes, tropical forests, and thundering waterfalls are just a few of the sights that await adventurous spirits hiking Oahu's numerous trails.

From the couch potato to the workout fanatic, the island has a hike for every fitness level but no matter what trail you embark on, there are a few things every hiker should know about Hawai'i's trails.

First, to take a page from the Boy Scout's handbook: always be prepared. Hawai'i is a warm, humid, tropical area, so it is important to stay hydrated. Sturdy shoes are also a necessity because trails are often muddy and slick so footing can be hazardous. Other items that come in handy are sunscreen and insect repellent.

One of the astounding facts about Hawai'i is that there are no poisonous plants, animals, or even snakes to worry about. In fact, because the Hawaiian Islands are so geographically isolated, birds are the only fauna native to the state. However, some trails on Oahu do double as pig hunting areas, but staying on the designated paths will prevent any accidents.

Some trails in Hawai'i also have fluorescent ribbons tied to trees along the way. These are not just decorative ornaments but serve as path markers. Following the ribbons will ensure hikers stay on course.

Another unusual item found at the beginning of some hikes are brushes planted in the ground. As you hike along trails, your shoes can pick up seeds from invasive plant species and brushing your feet can help prevent the spread of these plants.

Finally, hike with a buddy. Not only will a friend make the experience more enjoyable, but he or she can also offer assistance should any dangerous situations arise. Plus, someone needs to hold the camera when you reach the end of the trail.
