Nothing feels more freeing or exciting than riding a jet ski over the waves of the Pacific Ocean. Fans of jet skiing liken the sport to driving a motorcycle over the ocean. You can find these "motorcycles of the sea" in several locations throughout Oahu.

Although introduced in the 1960s, jet skiing didn't gain popularity until the 1970s when a new, faster model was introduced to the market. While jet skiing isn't as popular as other sports in Hawaii, such as surfing or snorkeling, many will find it an exhilarating experience. You shouldn't have any difficulty learning to operating one of these machines, and soon you'll be soaring over the blue water with the wind in your face.

Most places recommend you wear goggles so your eyes aren't irritated. Also, the rental companies will suggest you ride tandem with someone you know to "save money and have more fun." Don't fall for this. Most of the time they suggest you ride tandem to save them money, not you. Riding alone is generally more fun. If you're uncomfortable with riding your own jet ski, however, feel free to jump on with a friend! Be sure to go in the morning, as the water tends to be smoother during this time.

Most companies give you half an hour on the jet ski. Also, you will most likely be able to pair your jet ski rental with a parasail ride, if you'd like more adventure.

Recommended Rentals

Sea Breeze - Sea Breeze operates out of Maunalua Bay near Hawaii Kai (east of Waikiki). In addition to jet ski rentals, they offer parasailing, scuba diving, speed sailing and other extreme water activities. For half an hour of riding, it costs $51.31 per person, for a tandem jet ski, or $77.49 for a single rider. Website: www.seabreezewatersports.com

Xtreme Parasail - Though Xtreme Parasail specializes in parasail rides, they also offer great jet skiing, fishing expeditions, and a high-speed boat ride called the Honolulu Screamer. They are located near Waikiki. For half an hour of riding, you'll pay $53.36 per person for two, or $71.50 for a single rider. Website: www.xtremeparasail.com

Aloha Jet Ski - At Aloha Jet Ski, run from Tom Barefoot's Tours, they allow you 45 minutes for their prices. They run out of Ke'ehi Lagoon, a sheltered body of water near the airport. For two people on a jet ski it's $72.90, not per person. At this price, you are renting one jet ski with the intention of having two people ride it. For a single rider on a single jet ski, it's $67.90. So if you're planning on going tandem, this is your best bet when it comes to prices. Website: www.tombarefoot.com/oahu/aloha_jetski.html
