Want to feel the sand between your toes in the same place that was once the home to Hawaiian royalty? Be sure to check out Kuhio Beach in Waikiki, located between the Sheraton Moana Surfrider Hotel and the Kapahulu Groin. This beach was once the site of Pualeilani, the prodigious residence of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana'ole and his wife, Princess Elizabeth Kahanu.

Kuhio Beach became public in 1918 and was originally fronted by a shallow reef. In 1951, the area changed dramatically as part of the Waikiki Beach Improvement Project. Sand was brought in from other parts of Oahu to enhance the oceanfront and picnic tables, restrooms, volleyball nets, showers, and food concessions, and a large pedestrian promenade was developed as well. From the promenade you'll get a full view of Waikiki Beach where the water is shallow, providing the perfect hangout for families with children.

Queen's and Canoes, two of Waikiki's most famous surfing spots, can also be found at Kuhio Beach. Waikiki Beach Boys offer beginner surf lessons and other activities including catamaran sailing, outrigger canoeing, and snorkeling. In addition to these already impressive offerings, Kuhio Beach is also home to major Hawaiian landmarks including the Stones of Kapaemahu, the Duke Kahanamoku Statue, and the Prince Kuhio statue. The Kuhio Beach Torch Lighting and a free Hula Show can be enjoyed two to seven days a week depending on the season, and free movies are played twice a month, dubbed "Sunset on the Beach."

While you're at Kuhio Beach don't forget to check out Kapiolani Park, Honolulu Zoo, and the Waikiki Aquarium all conveniently located within walking distance.
