It's a perfect day in Paradise: sunny, warm, lightly breezy, a touch of clouds for shade. You could certainly sip Mai Tais at your beachfront resort all day, but why not venture outside of Waikiki, to a place where you can sink your toes into the sand with no high-rise buildings or ABC Stores in sight?

South shore Sandy Beach, known as "Sandy's" to locals, provides a near perfect example of iconic Hawaiian shoreline: a vast stretch of warm yellow sand melting into a sea of turquoise and blue with lush green cliffs in the background and black lava rock extending into the ocean. Note the lifeguard stand, restrooms, showers, palm trees, picnic areas, and adjoining lawn for the sand-weary, and you have yourself an ideal day at the beach. Plus, it's only a half hour drive east of Waikiki.

But there's a catch. When the surf's up, especially during winter months, Sandy Beach has a gnarly shore break, which is great for experienced local body surfers and boogie boarders, but perhaps deadly for unassuming visitors. Many a neck injury has resulted here after inexperienced swimmers attempted these powerful sets. Even if you're confident in your ocean ability, avoid the treacherous stretch of lava rock called "The Point" in front of the restroom. Also beware Keawaakio Cove to the left of the point, where a rip tide current rages in calm and rough waters.

Check with lifeguards on duty for current ocean conditions. If swimming doesn't happen, at least you can enjoy the view and work on your suntan.
