If you know anything about Oahu's North Shore, you know that beachgoers, snorkelers and surfers all consider it a favorite. On weekends and weekdays alike you'll be hard pressed to find a parking spot at the most popular beaches. Now imagine a beach on North Shore where, on a Saturday, you can find no more than ten people lying in the sun. That's Kawela Bay.

Located next to Turtle Bay Resort near the northern tip of Oahu, Kawela Bay's seclusion makes it an enviable spot for beachgoers and the perfect place to get away from the crowds to enjoy a day of relaxation. The warm water, free of currents, also remains undisturbed by large winter waves because of a reef at the entrance of the bay. The absence of a shallow reef makes the middle and western parts of the bay ideal for swimming, while the eastern section is perfect for snorkeling. Show caution when swimming on the western end because the beach lines a gated community.

The beach has plenty of room to stretch out. A tropical forest borders the entire beach, where you can find loads of shade when the sun gets too hot. As Kawela means "the heat" in Hawaiian, you need it. Take some time to stroll along the beach and admire the wildlife. If you look closely, you'll find small crabs peeking from holes in the sand and turtles idling by. On a typical visit to Kawela Bay you will probably see at least one turtle swimming in the water. Another fun fact: several scenes of the hit show Lost were filmed in the surrounding forest.

Location

Lazy beach-goers beware–Kawela Bay stays secluded because of the difficulty in getting there. To find your way, pass Haleiwa on the North Shore and go east towards Turtle Bay Resort. Before you get to the resort (about a mile before) you'll pass a fruit and vegetable stand. Park your car on the side of the road right after the stand. Toward the ocean you'll see a fence with a "No Trespassing" sign (don't worry, Turtle Bay officials have confirmed that you can disregard the sign). There will be an opening in fence. Head straight through on a short walk to the bay.
