If you are looking for a walk along a white sandy beach of Hawai'i, Sunset beach is over two miles of pristine sand, warm, clear water, and yes, tropical Hawaiian sunsets. In the summer, Sunset is crowded with sun worshippers playing in the calm waves, or collecting shells in the tide pools. The days are long, and it is easy to figure out why people from all over the world swarm to the North shore for a day at this legendary beach. During the winter months, the beach scene changes. The surfers regain their reign, and Sunset Beach is the site of the O'Neil World Cup of Surfing competition, and occasional site for the Quicksilver Big Wave Invitational. Waves can reach up to 25 feet in the wintertime. Extra caution should be taken if you are in the water; a notorious riptide is just off shore. Facilities at Sunset include rest rooms, showers, and a daytime lifeguard.
