Fueled by the memory of the poignant sacrifices of both the Issei and Nisei (first and second generations), founders of the Japanese Cultural Center have created a lasting legacy that celebrates the roots of the Japanese community in Hawai'i. Now, this five story building boasts a martial arts studio, tea house and garden, Historical and Community Gallery and gift shop. In addition, visitors can experience a wide variety of activities for very little cost.
Hawai'i's largest martial arts studio is found here, with classes in traditional kendo (the way of the sword), karate, aikido, naginata as well as traditional dance. The hard wood floor studio spans 2,500 feet and a tatami-covered kamiza (stage) allows visitors to observe demonstrations.
The Seikoan Tea House has three tea rooms for practice of the Japanese Tea Ceremony, including the Seikōan (Shining Star) Tea House and Garden, a spectacular must-experience for all visitors.
The Historical Gallery takes visitors on a tour of Japanese-American history, showcasing the years of Japanese immigration and the backlash of World War II upon immigrants. The Community Gallery hosts a more contemporary look at Japanese culture and arts displaying a wide variety of visual arts, including sculpture, photography and woodblock prints.
The giftshop allows visitors to purchase authentic kimonos, sandals, tea sets and Japanese dolls.
Demonstrations, special guest speakers and community events are available all year long including cultural classes such as Chadō (The Way of Tea), kumihimo (Japanese braiding) and shodō/ shūji (Japanese calligraphy).
