The staccato of drums and rhythmic Hawaiian chanting resonates throughout the Polynesian Cultural Center. A canoe glides gently across the still lagoon, surrounded by waterfalls, tropical flora and an "erupting" volcano. This 42-acre facility on Oahu's North Shore is dedicated to preserving Polynesian culture, and provides visitors an opportunity to experience all of Polynesia in just one day.
At the Polynesian Cultural Center, visitors can explore the different customs of each of the eight recreated South Pacific villages: Samoa, Aotearoa (Maori New Zealand), Fiji, Hawai'i, Marquesas, Tahiti, Tonga and Rapa Nui. You can fine-tune your skills in spear throwing, fire walking and fire pit cooking. Or try tiki carving, tree climbing and fire starting.
Delve further in the traditions of Polynesia by going to a Hawaiian luau. Enjoy Hawaiian music, hula, and an all-you-can-eat buffet of Hawaiian cuisine. Everyone should try a helping of steaming Kahlua pork, wrapped delicately in ti leaves and served over rice. A canoe pageant and IMAX theater are also part of the experience.
The Polynesian Cultural Center was created in 1963 to give Brigham Young University Hawai'i students the opportunity to work through college by sharing their culture with others. It's not only an entertaining, family-friendly experience, but also a great opportunity for visitors to learn about the diverse cultures of Polynesia.
