The Hawaiian Islands generally evoke images of sand, surf and bikinis, but one of Oahu's most magnificent attractions cannot be found on any beach, but instead deep within the mountains of Honolulu in Manoa Valley.
Manoa Falls is a 150-feet vertical cliff preceded by a 0.8 mile trail through a lush tropical rain forest. Be warned though: this trek is not for beginners, and the beauty does come at a price. Hikers should expect slippery and muddy conditions. Backpackers will start at the base of the Ko'oau Mountains and travel through a lavish bamboo forest past teeming eucalyptus trees. Hikers should wear appropriate footwear and bring water as there are no facilities on the trail. But the reward at the hike's end is not only a cascading blue waterfall but also a small pool below the falls, perfect for swimming. The bottom of the pool is filled with boulders however, so be careful as you swim.
After taking in the cool, refreshing waters and tranquility of one of Hawaii's great natural wonders, stop by the Lyon Arboretum. It is located before the entrance of the hike and is the only university botanical garden located in a tropical rainforest in the United States. The arboretum is comprised of almost 200 acres at the top of the Manoa watershed, and includes cottages and greenhouses used for research and community education. What better way to experience the island while also learning about the plants and the natural methods utilized in preserving Hawaii's natural beauty?
While in the area, don't forget to visit the flagship University of Hawai'i campus, University of Hawai'i at Manoa, home of the Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors.
