Set into the lush folds of Manoa Valley among 200 acres of dense tropical rain forest, the Lyon Arboretum is an easy escape from nearby Waikiki. Combining an enchanting topography of man-made gardens with Hawai'i's natural beauty, the Arboretum is home to over 7,500 species of plants, and is any nature-lover's dream come true. Walking pathways lead you through the gardens, or take a longer trail into the forest or to `Aihualama Waterfall. Whichever you choose, all trees, herbs, and flowering plants are labeled to support a magical experience in a museum that's alive.
The Arboretum also functions as an outdoor laboratory for the University of Manoa's research students with a focus on Native Hawaiian plant conservation and ecosystem restoration, thus providing a community resource that is not only one of the last accessible rain forests on Oahu, but a safe home to 200 of Hawai'i's indigenous plants.
The Arboretum offers a more tranquil experience than the adjacent Manoa Falls, usually bustling during peak season. It is easy to spend a day lounging on the lawn with a picnic lunch, taking the time to appreciate the exotic beauty of Hawai'i. A bird checklist is available at the Visitor's Center, and be sure to listen for the distinctive sound of the native 'Amakihi. For those that are inspired by this gardener's delight, plants are for sale in the main greenhouse.
