Ho`omaluhia means, "to make a place of peace and tranquility." The Ho`omaluhia Botanical Gardens embodies the essence of its name, and more. The garden not only provides a peaceful, tranquil haven for visitors, but also shares with them its philosophy of environmental awareness and ecological education. Just over Pali Highway on the windward side, this garden is a calm respite from constant buzzing of downtown Honolulu and Waikiki. The drive to the garden reveals the lush expanses of green land and unique foliage. When parked, the visitor's center sheds light on the Botanical Garden's ecological education goals and guests can appreciate some tokens from local artists. As guests begin their trek throughout the garden, the red fish signs lead to a large lake. This area is where the Botanical Gardens occasionally hosts public fishing days. These family-friendly events supply poles for the kids but visitors should bring their own bait.

Ho`omaluhia is one of five horticultural gardens on Oahu, all of which are committed to the protection and public education of the special ecological system of the island. Guided hikes are offered on the weekends, where tour guides emphasize the connection between human culture and the natural world. In addition, kahua, or campgrounds, at the garden are open to the public with a validated permit, which are issued at the garden's Visitor Center. Partake in the garden's craft making, cloud watching or botanical and horticultural activities which remind visitors about the importance of "kokua" a Hawaiian term that represents a love for helping others. From the free hikes and fishing, to arts and crafts activities, the Ho`omaluhia Botanical Gardens epitomizes kokua and environmental education for everyone.
