Covering 27 lush acres in Central Oahu, Wahiawa Botanical Garden houses many different tropical floras, many of which require a relatively cold environment. There is also a developing collection of Native Hawaiian plants. In the 1920s, this land was leased to the Hawai'i Sugar Planters Association for experimental tree planting. Control of the property was later released to the City & County of Honolulu, and the botanical garden was born in 1957.
Self-guided tours allow visitors the opportunity to view a diverse plant collection in this beautiful outdoor setting. Everything from Colocasia esculenta, better known to the locals as the Hawaiian taro plant, to Cinnamomum verum, or cinnamon, can be found in the garden.
Wahiawa Botanical Garden, Foster Botanical Garden, Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, Koko Crater Botanical Garden and Lili'uokalani Botanical Garden make up the five Honolulu Botanical Gardens.
