What better way to get a feel for local Oahu culture than by buying fresh foods straight from the friendly, local farmers who produce them? A bright spot in any city, farmers markets are known as great places to find the healthiest food available, since it's completely fresh and grown by farmers who care—they show up early to these weekly events just for you.
Considered one of the biggest and best in Honolulu, the farmers market at Kapiolani Community College (KCC) offers fresh-off-the-farm food produced by vendors that generally sell only to restaurants, so you know it's good stuff. Not only can you find the usual fruits, veggies, baked goods, and preserves, but each week different restaurants offer tasty breakfast foods and aromatic Hawaiian coffee for you to enjoy while you shop. What makes KCC different from other farmers markets is that you won't find the usual apples, blueberries, and romaine lettuce sold on the Mainland. Instead, you can chomp on mango, papaya, and other tropical fruits that can't be just-picked in your home town.
If you've never seen a particular food before, or don't know how to best prepare it, just ask. All farmers and vendors are knowledgeable and friendly; they'll even tell you which pan to use, or show you where to find another food to complement your dish.
If you're tired of eating out, or just want to try something a little more local, stop by this little mecca of fresh foods parked in the middle of a city often too busy to smell the flowers. And yes, you can buy those there too. Just don't forget your shopping bags and coolers—you'll fill them up fast.
